How to Export Electrical Appliances to Other Countries?

    JUL 03, 2025

Electrical appliances, electronic devices, and various conveniences—such as mobile phones, laptops, toys, fans, and hairdryers—are common products that many people wish to export abroad. But if you're wondering how to send these items and whether the process is complicated, the good news is that it’s easier than you might think. Today, CPL will provide helpful insights on how to export different types of electrical appliances.

    Types of Electrical Appliances:

Non-battery-powered Appliances: Non-battery-powered appliances are typically those that require plugging into an electrical outlet. If you want to export these to another country, they can usually be shipped directly without special restrictions. Examples include fans and hairdryers.

Battery-powered Appliances: Battery-powered appliances require special consideration because the batteries generate charge and can pose safety risks, such as fire hazards during transportation, especially by air. Battery types are divided into two categories that can be exported:

Types of Batteries in Electrical Appliances:

    • Lithium-ion Batteries: These are the most common type found in portable electronics like laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players, and video cameras. These batteries are rechargeable and can hold a charge when the battery is low.
    • Lithium-metal Batteries: These are longer-lasting than regular alkaline batteries and are often found in products like toys and calculators. However, these batteries are non-rechargeable and must be disposed of once the charge is depleted.

How to Ship Battery-powered Electrical Appliances:

When shipping appliances with lithium batteries, there are specific regulations established by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Here’s a brief guide on shipping lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries:

Example 1: Lithium-ion batteries (under 100 Wh) or lithium-metal batteries (under 2kg) packed with equipment (less than 5kg)

    • No need for a declaration from the shipper
    • The air waybill must include the statement: "Lithium-ion batteries in compliance with PI966 Category II"
    • Only 1-2 items can be shipped
    • The package must display a "UN3481" label indicating it contains a lithium battery

Example 2: Lithium-ion batteries (under 100 Wh) or lithium-metal batteries (under 2kg) packed with equipment (over 5kg)

    • A declaration from the shipper is required
    • The air waybill must include: "Dangerous goods in accordance with the attached shipper's declaration" and "Cargo aircraft only"
    • Shipments weighing over 35kg cannot be shipped
    • Must comply with UN packaging standards
    • Lithium battery class 9 label and CAO label are required on the box
